How to Set Goals for Self Improvement

Making A Personal Development Plan

You are ready for a change. You are ready to start working towards your goals and you are ready to finally achieve your dreams. But how are you going to get from point A to point B? How are you going to jump start your life and set things in motion to reach your goals and finally live your dream? The first step in achieving the success you so richly deserve is creating a personal development plan.

What Is A Personal Development Plan?

A personal development plan is, quite simply, an explanation of how you expect to achieve your goals and in what time frame. When making one of these plans, you need to put your dreams into realistic goals, identify which goals you want to reach in what order, and put a time frame on them. The time frame is very important in a personal development plan. Without a time frame, you have no reason to really get the things done in a decent amount of time.

Before Making Your Personal Development Plan

Before you make your personal development plan, you have to really get to know yourself. Sit down and think about your life, your goals, and even your most “out there” dreams. The more you know about yourself, the more fulfillment you will have in your life. Look at the gifts and talents that you have. Recognize what life challenges are in your life that are blocking your success. Look deep inside and see what things you might be doing to set yourself back or sabotage your chances for success. Very importantly, think about what gives you purpose and meaning in your life, and know what values, morals, and beliefs give you strength in your life. Knowing this about yourself will help you to achieve optimum success in life.

Writing Your Personal Development Plan

Write down what you want to achieve. It can be something like a promotion, or it can even be something like quitting smoking. Next, write all of the resources that you will use or need in order to achieve your goal. If it is applicable, schedule a specific time each day to use those resources to help achieve your goal. If it is something like not smoking, schedule a group therapy session once a week. If it is a promotion, schedule time to read up on your field. Finally, set a time frame for your goal. Make sure that it is realistic and is something that you can, with hard work, achieve. Once you’ve met your goal, make sure to celebrate!
